AMAAS Code of Conduct

AMAAS Code of Conduct 

Alberta Media Arts Alliance Society (AMAAS) is committed to safe and respectful workplaces and to an arts sector free of harassment including sexual harassment, discrimination, bullying and violence.

Expected Behavior
We insist that everyone remains mindful of, and takes responsibility for, their speech and behavior. This includes:

• Always acting out of respect and concern for the free expression of others.
• Actively listening to others and not dominating discussions.
• Respecting physical and emotional boundaries.
• Not making assumptions about identity, experiences, or preferred pronouns
• Not using words that are racist, sexist, transphobic, homophobic or classist

Unacceptable Behavior and Actions
We do not tolerate oppressive behavior, harassment, destructive behavior, or exclusionary actions.

Oppressive behavior: any conduct that demeans, marginalizes, rejects, threatens or harms anyone on the basis of identity, background or ability.

Harassment: deliberate intent of stalking, following, harassing; unauthorized photography or recording; disruption of events; aggressive, derogatory or threatening comments; and/or unwanted physical contact or sexual attention.

Destructive behavior: damaging or altering any part of AMAAS property; including furniture, equipment or other people’s belongings.

Exclusionary actions: denying opportunities to share views, skills and other contributions; engaging in favoritism, and creating or reinforcing an inequitable learning environment.

AMAAS prohibits bringing onto their property dangerous or unauthorized materials such as explosives, firearms, weapons or other similar items and any conduct endangering the life, safety, health or well-being of others.

ARTIST CONDUCT
Artists with a history of abusive or discriminatory behaviour, or behaviour that is otherwise deemed detrimental to the creation of safer spaces at AMAAS, are not welcome at AMAAS. All programming decisions are made in consideration of these concerns using the fullest extent of our knowledge.

AMAAS believes survivors. We reserve the right to cancel any artist, without payment or other compensation, who we believe to have a history of abusive or discriminatory behaviour, or behaviour that is otherwise deemed detrimental to the creation of safer spaces at AMAAS. The safety of survivors is always our primary consideration, and any decision to cancel an artist will be made on a case-by-case basis in consultation with survivors when possible.

Anyone asked to stop unacceptable behavior is expected to comply immediately.

Anyone who engages in sustained unacceptable behavior may be sanctioned or permanently dismissed from Alberta Media Arts Alliance Society without warning (and without refund in the case of a paid event).

Please note: We are a very small staff and do not have the human resources to guarantee an immediate response to concerns. Regardless of timing, we believe survivors and will address all concerns as efficiently as possible.

We do not have the expertise or authority to mediate conflicts or provide advice on conflict or crisis resolution.
