Student Winners – Medicine Hat Film Festival Video Competition

The winning videos from the student competition will be shown Friday night. Also, Rory Mahony, new media artist and video instructor at the Medicine Hat College will give a brief talk.

Presentation: “Marketing – A Key to Your Success”

Whether you are a media artist, a media-arts centre manager, or the organizer of a film festival, you need marketing. It matters little if you produce the best products or services, if you do not get them to market you will not get the credit you deserve.

Three experts representing different aspects of the media arts business will deliver concrete ideas on how to market effectively. The panel comprises: Mr. David Cheoros, Executive Director, Film and Video Arts Society of Alberta. David has an impressive background in marketing the arts. Mr. Joel Maendel, Executive Director, Metro Cinema Society is one of Alberta’s leaders in marketing film and video festivals and providing insights into distribution systems. A Successful Video artist from Calgary with a winning history of success in marketing.

Featured Artists

Don Ritter

Don has combined his various backgrounds in painting, computer programming and psychology to produce interactive video and sound installations. A quote from his website states, “Since 1986, Don Ritter’s large scale interactive installations, performances and video tapes have been exhibited in 15 countries in North America, Eastern and Western Europe, and Asia”. Don is an artist whose technology-based works are considered among the most interesting and memorable being produced today. Born in Alberta, Don now lives and works in New York City.

Raylene Campbell and Don Ross

Members of the Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society (BEAMS), Raylene and Don will be performing together Saturday evening. Raylene has been an accordionist for twenty-seven years and has been active as a performer and electroacoustic composer/audio artist for nearly a decade. Don is a clarinetist and is the leader of Saint Crispin’s Chamber Ensemble, one of Edmonton’s busiest and most innovative art music groups. Don’s students at Alberta College Conservatory are frequent competition and audition winners and he is much in demand as a clinician and adjudicator.

Keynote Address

Dana Shukster will give a keynote address on the theme of “Defining Communities through the Arts”. Dana Shukster is the Chairperson for the Medicine Hat Cultural Alliance and is an active member of the cultural community. Dana is an expert and experienced in the arts on local, provincial and national levels.

Weekend Excursions and Activities

Participants in the conference will have the option to tour Medalta Potteries or take a nature and interpretive walk through Police Point Park on Saturday afternoon. Medalta is a national historic site that is a tribute to a time when the determination and craftsmanship of ordinary people created an unparalleled industrial ceramic industry. Police Point Park provides an excellent view of the unique Medicine Hat landscape with over 400 acres and access to the beautiful South Saskatchewan River. A Nature History Interpreter will guide the walk.

Prairie Tales Screenings. This is the Fifth Edition of Prairie Tales, an acclaimed compendium of film and video art featuring Alberta Media Artists.

Sunday morning before brunch, a 50-minute ashtanga yoga session will take place for all those interested.
