2008 amaas Conference –We Rocked Red Deer!
Artists from across Alberta and Canada gathered in Red Deer May 2 – 4 for three hectic days of talks, exhibition, screening, discount shopping, and rock & roll.
The 2008 amaas Conference in Red Deer attracted a record 66 participants, whose art disciplines included film, video, media art, performance, music, electronic and flash art, animation, writing, photography and dance. amaas’ mighty member centres QAS, Metro, EMMEDIA, FAVA, NUTV and CSIF were all represented, many with numerous delegates, and there were independent artists from Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer and Lethbridge in attendance.
Guest artists and presenters included Fabiola Nabil Naguib (Galliano Island), David McCallum (Toronto) and Jfry Craig (Montreal/Calgary), all of whom talked and presented samples of their work. The rock band The Wet Secrets were featured performers.
Other special guests included 7 of the 15 artists who premiered their work at the Conference in a new edition of Prairie Tales; the amaas commission award winner Anne Koizumi; and the Spirit of Helen Award winner Sharon Adams.
Programming was extremely eclectic, reflecting the wide-ranging level of activity in the media art world. David McCallum presented sound and performance art drawn from raw data and a live feed camera; Fabiola Nabil Naguib gave a presentation on her life of activism and art; Jfry Craig provided a snap-shot history of the internet, and challenged artists to make more innovative use of the technology and potential of the web. The Conference also hosted the Party at the Vat, which featured screenings of new work from over 16 artists; and ended with a boisterous set of pure rock and roll fun by The Wet Secrets – the dance floor was jumpin’ all night. Also include was review of current amaas projects, and a trip to the infamous Red Deer Value Village for discount shopping and video art!
