EMMEDIA and "Eye Level" presents: Night Equals Day

NIGHT EQUALS DAY

Canada 2008, 30 min, 35mm, Dir: Adrian Blackwell

Presented by EMMEDIA, in Conjunction with the exhibition ‘Eye Level’ curated by Tomas Jonsson

An Open Forum Discussion and Reception with Artists Adrian Blackwell (Toronto) and Ossi Kajas (Helsinki) in attendance will take place Saturday March 13, 2010 2 - 5 p.m.  For further details please see:  http://www.onsitereview.ca/eyelevel

Eye Level
Adrian Blackwell, Ossi Kajas, Rufina Wu & Stefan Canham

Curated by Tomas Jonsson

Pith Gallery - 1018 9th Avenue S.E.
February 1 – March 16, 2010

Filmed in Toronto's Regent Park from sunrise to sunset on October fourth 2008, Night Equals Day was shot at one frame per second with a 35mm film camera mounted on a motorized tripod head, rotating one tenth of a degree every second, or one full rotation each hour, capturing twelve daylight panoramas from 7:00am until 7:00pm. The installation is governed by a simple mathematical logic of shutter and pan speeds and the symmetrical relationship between the time of filming and the time of projection. It is intended to raise questions about the temporality of urban renewal and the equality between successive forms of the city’s fabric. The film rotates at the intersection of Sackville and Oak Streets, at the boundary between the neighbourhood built in the 1950s and the construction site of the new buildings which are replacing it.

Featured EMMEDIA Workshops in March!

EMMEDIA WORKSHOPS

Our various workshops equip artists with the skills necessary to access and operate EMMEDIA's facility and equipment with competence and confidence. EMMEDIA offers a variety of workshops in digital video, audio and multimedia. We have a pool of skilled facilitators from a variety of disciplines. Within EM's creative environment, artists develop the technical and aesthetic experience necessary to operate as an independent producer. Over the years, EMMEDIA has encouraged thousands of members to become established media artists, producers, and facilitators.

CLASSES - REGULAR OR CUSTOM

The most popular workshops are scheduled regularly but we can organize a custom class around any media arts related topic. Production and post-production workshops include practice time. For participants that obtain Producer Membership, a free afternoon or evening camera rental (i.e. half price for a one-day rental) is available for Video Production Workshop. Eight hours of practice time at the reduced rate of $5 per hour is available with a Post-Production Workshop. Members must take advantage of this offer within one month of taking the workshop. The majority of our workshops are limited to six participants to ensure that artists receive quality instruction and equipment access. Feel free to provide us with your experience level and specific interests so the classes can be geared towards your needs. Most of our workshops run only with a minimum of four registered participants.

PAYMENT OPTIONS AND CANCELLATION POLICY

Your enrollment in any EMMEDIA workshop is not guaranteed until payment is received. Workshops must be paid for at least 3 days before workshop date with cash or cheque only. A member may cancel a workshop two business days prior to the booking date without charge. Cancellations made one business day before the booking will be charged half, and cancellations made on the day of the booking and/or no-shows will be charged the full rate. All workshops are subject to cancellation if there are insufficient registered participants. We will notify you regarding cancellation at least 48 hours before the workshop. If we cancel the workshop, you are entitled to a full refund or you may transfer to another scheduled workshop, space permitting.

SCREENING PROGRAM:

Double U for Werewolf
Tamara Meparishvili
5:25 min.

Double U for Werewolf is an animation/video project with a composed electronic soundtrack. The work combines animated dream sequences with live video footage, and depicts a parasitizing effect of the mind on the body. The main character in the video is split into two different parts, one part is a running man and one is a light bulb.

Tamara Meparishvili is a multi-media artist working with video, animation and sound. With an MFA in Painting from A.Kutateladze Tbilisi Academy of Art in Georgia, she has exhibited her video and sound work in Germany, Georgia and Canada.

WITCH
Micheal Welchman
6:00 min.

WITCH is based on the powerful simplicity of dialogue found within children's fables, mixed with abstract video illustrations. Hand drawn type based animations along with static video of lungs, tree men, witches, ghosts, and knives are cut together in succession to form a video story book. The story line was formed through repeated attempts at stream of consciousness story telling. The video uses a mix of simple and deliberate compositions fleshed out with complex costume and prop design.

Micheal Welchman is a Calgary based artist working predominately in drawing and video.  Although his drawing practice spans to the beginning of his art education, video is a relatively new medium for him.  Micheal was born and raised on the Canadian prairies.  It is this influence that can often be seen in images of stark landscapes and strong horizontal compositions.  Besides working solely on his own projects, Micheal has also worked in different capacities on a large number of independent films within the Calgary filmmaking community.  This is his second video with EMMEDIA's Production Access Program.

Tranzar É Pras Amantes: Sex Is For Lovers
Wednesday Lupypciw
13:45 min.

In this project I examine the notion of traveling from one's homeland to somewhere far away as a metaphor for self-realization - the tense area between having a desire and fulfilling it. Canada and Brasil are my inspirations, but as each place is a sort of home to me, the potential for traveler's discovery is ironically limited, or cancelled out.

A lot of the footage is meant to normalize subversive elements of Canadian living for Brasilians, and vice versa; garish nonsensical fashion, queerness, inappropriate emotions, bodily delights and derelict or pretend locations all figure prominently in the "everyday" scenes on tape.

North and South American customs are exaggerated and glamourized until each society becomes equally fantastical and full of my own personal symbolism and longing. However, in trying to create bacchanalian excess, I have found that I am still extremely self-conscious. Giving myself permission to live strange tropical lives and engage in uninhibited yearning has only resulted in my questioning what I really want after all.

Wednesday Lupypciw is from Calgary, Alberta, where she pursues a lo-fi video and performance art practice. An involved arts programmer, she also maintains a concurrent practice in textiles— weaving, machine knitting, embroidery and crochet. Aware of North Americans’ never-ceasing cycle of current events and material possessions, she views her practice as a commemorative but ephemeral series of activities. Operating according to the egalitarian principles of the DIY movement, the aesthetic of her output is firmly planted within contemporary, "radical craft" contexts. She is a Fibre programme graduate from the Alberta College of Art & Design, and has shown work in various artist-run spaces throughout Canada including Harbourfront, TRUCK, Stride, Nuit Blanche Toronto and EMMEDIA..

Sandcastle
Anne Marie Nakagawa
9:57 min.

In an unnamed place, in an unnamed time, a man and a woman go through the motions of life, fused to each other for a reason neither of them can remember. Meandering through a withering landscape of loneliness and thread-bare self consciousness, Sand Castle is an experimental film that explores the futility of relationship and our inability to escape it. In this stark black and white world, all desires and memories are sublimated into shades of grey.

Anne Marie Nakagawa is a Calgary-based writer and director. She has written and directed several long-form documentary films, as well as numerous experimental shorts that have played at festivals and galleries worldwide. Between: Living in the Hyphen, a National Film Board of Canada production, premiered at the Calgary International Film Festival in 2005 and went on to win numerous awards.

Cloud of Unknowing
Miruna Dragan
4:48 min.

In the fall of 2008 I attended the Comic Ray Research residency at The Banff Centre. There I created the latest installment in an on-going series of site-specific installations / interventions on golf courses entitled The Fertile Void. The Fertile Void V: The Cloud of Unknowing was installed and interacted with on a fairway of the Banff Springs Golf Club. The title for this project comes from a 14th century Christian mystical text - a handbook for the spiritual quest. Particularly inspired by the quote "let your longing relentlessly beat upon the cloud of unknowing", two hundred pentagonal balloons were loosely arranged in a cloud-like formation measuring approx. 1 x 2 x 3 meters - until the wind carried them away.

The video documentation of our actions on site was slowed to a very small percentage of the original speed, creating an ethereal and numinous sense of an otherwise straightforward footage. If the theme of this program, "crash", can be understood as a rapid collision of materials or ideas then it might be fair to say that my project functions as a type of anti-crash, depicting a protracted dispersion of material and activity into a nearly infinite space.

Miruna Dragan is a Romanian-American visual artist with an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (2001). She has attended residencies at Skowhegan, Vermont Studio Center, Art Farm, and The Banff Centre and has exhibited in the US, The Netherlands, Romania, Germany, Mexico, Greece, and Canada. She is also a member of the international artist collective Unconstrained Growth Into the Void. Her professional experience includes teaching appointments in the US, Mexico, Ghana, Austria and The Netherlands. During her residence in Holland (2003 - 2008), Dragan also engaged in assorted freelance photography, film, and graphic design projects and was PR & Production Coordinator for Amsterdam-based foundation Agentur - an international platform for contemporary artists and curators. Dragan is the newly appointed permanent faculty in Drawing at the Alberta College of Art + Design.

Aggregated Vicinity
Peter Redecopp
4:17 min.

Aggregated Vicinity is an accumulation of sights and sounds collected from the city and reorganized in real-time by the artist. Blending video footage, still images & audio recordings together in a disjointed manner, Aggregated Vicinity is a continually evolving work, as new materials are added and each presentation offering new juxtapositions.

Peter Redecopp is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is focused on accumulation and its consequences. Since 2007 he has been organizing Discord, a noise performance series which has also featured video/sound/visual art, documentaries & animation.

Arctic Year
Jennifer McVeigh
5:20 min.

Based on faded imagery and fragments of text, this project utilizes exposure and colour balance manipulation to explore the imaginative possibilities of arctic research. Jenny Gilbertson (the artist's namesake) was a documentary filmmaker who began her career in the early 1920s in the remote Shetland Islands of Scotland. In the late 1960s, after producing and directing dozens of films (the archives of which were stored in a chicken coop) and raising a family, Jenny re-located to northern Manitoba. In her 70s and 80s she lived and worked in several arctic communities, documenting the changes brought about by more contact with the south, participating in community celebrations and more.

Though Jenny was prolific and energetic throughout her life, only fragments of her practice exist today. One film "Walrus Hunt", is in the NFB archives, while many others have disappeared from view. Much of the information I have about her work comes from personal correspondence she wrote to me as a child, detailing her travels and efforts to fund, edit and distribute her films. My curiosity lies in these gaps - particularly Jenny's Arctic Year - a film which is described as chronicling 12 months in the life of the settlement where she came to live.

Jennifer McVeigh is artist and writer living in Calgary. She has been a regular contributor to the visual art sections of the Calgary Herald and FFWD Magazine, in addition to national publications including Canadian Art. In 2006, she completed an MA in Visual Culture at the University of Westminster in London, England where her research centred on linguistic analysis of written texts used in museum exhibits.

Recent projects include On the Road Again - a community-based collaboration with artist Tomas Jonsson in which a procession of second-hand furniture was used to commemorate Calgary's rapid urban growth. She has edited a 25th anniversary publication for TRUCK artist-run centre and is currently serving on the programming committee for Emmedia Gallery and Production Society.

Arithmetic: Annie's Life in Numbers
Michal Lavi
13:30 min.

Arithmetic is Annie’s story: At a young age, Annie receives a pet fish that meets an untimely death. She burns her journal when she discovers The Diary of Anne Frank. She has issues with yoga, standoffs with dictators and university grads brandishing degrees she doesn’t care for. She makes New Years resolutions she’s sure she can keep, deals with her overbearing mom and a methodical dental hygienist, and lies with an orderliness and rigour that is virtually moral.

Michal Lavi has dabbled in writing and photography, but specialized in self-deprecation. Although she achieved great success in this field she got terribly bored, wishing she made films; so she finally decided to make them herself. Lavi treats making films and trying to produce them as a form of therapy since she is learning how to ask favors and dealing with rejection at the same time. Lavi is also writing a blog which she thinks is funny, working on a board game which is bizarre, since she doesn't like board games or people that like board games, and writing a feature.

Intersecting Circles
Moe Clark
5:32 min.

Multiple layers of footage are used to explore transcendence, sacred connection to the land, and the collision of bodies in spirit and space in this multi-disciplinary short.

Métis sound artist Moe Clark fuses her unique understanding of performance narrative with traditions of circle singing and spoken word. With a background in voice, spoken word, and visual arts, she creates a lyrical style, steeped in ritual and poetic exploration. Her poetic songs resonate with the power to heal, to celebrate spirit and to connect with authentic purpose.

with you in mind
Stefanie Wong and Keltie Duncan
4:20 min.

"with you in mind" explores our relationship with cloth and hair as physical and emotional extensions of the human body.

Stefanie Wong received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Alberta College of Art + Design, Calgary, AB in 2008. Her work inserts traditional textile processes and materials into a multi-disciplinary practice to examine our relationship with technology and its impact on intimacy and human interaction. Her latest animation, Around the Corner from Solitude has been screened across Canada in festivals to include the Reel Asian International Film Festival in Toronto, Antitube at the Musee de Civilization in Quebec City, and the Winnipeg Film Group in Winnipeg. Wong is currently living and working in Calgary, AB and finds great encouragement and inspiration from her five-year old daughter.

Keltie Duncan, a proud Edmontonian, comes from a Media Arts background (BFA[Hons], ACAD '06) with a focus on experimental animation. She has worked at the Quickdraw Animation Society in various capacities since 2004, as well as with EMMEDIA starting as a student curator for Digital Sugar Cubed. After employment in film and video, Keltie moved into arts administration and is currently the Festival Director of the biennial Mountain Standard Time Performative Art Festival.

A Dozen Ways
Andrea Mann
5:18

With this contribution to the 'CRASH'-themed Emmedia Compression Camp, Andrea has created a simple, humorous contemplation of ways to live enthusiastically in the present moment - which only exists as temporary peace and order between the inevitable major and minor crashes that disrupt even our best-laid plans.

Mirai, the main character in the film, is a sweet and quirky young woman dutifully conforming to the expectations of the world. As circumstances change suddenly and abruptly, she questions and quickly dismisses her previous assumptions and starts to live in a more free and creative way.

The playful egg-themed narrative was initially inspired by the cliche idioms "Don't put all your eggs in one basket" and "Nest Egg." In addition to the mundane financial meanings behind the egg symbol in these phrases, the image of the egg also embodies in very obvious form, symbols for: the future, hope, fertility, birth and re-birth. Much of the appeal of the egg as the central image of the narrative lies in the very obviousness of these associations, and the humor that results. And yet somehow the egg remains an object of beauty and fascination despite all cliche and unrefined associations.

Andrea Mann is a Calgary-based visual artist working in film, video and animation. From a background in painting, printmaking, installation, photography and writing, she has organically followed her conceptual interests toward her current and lasting fascination with time-based media. With an insatiable appetite for knowledge and a particular interest in psychology and cultural anthropology, the themes she is driven to explore often also wander into other topics of observation, contemplation and reverie. She sees her art practice not just as a creative and intellectual pursuit, but also as an ongoing rebellion against alienation and apathy, two powerful conditions of our time.

EMMEDIA Production Access 2010: Deadline extended!

DEADLINE EXTENDED: MARCH 15, 2010

About Production Access:

Every year EMMEDIA supports artists in the community through our Production Access Programs. Support includes access to workshops, production equipment, post-production facilities, and professional mentorship through the production process of a media artwork.  We encourage innovative and challenging work from a variety of artists working in various genres. Our support to media artists extends beyond those working in video to encompass diverse forms of time-based art including installation, documentary, narrative, animation, performance, new media, audio, and web-based projects.

Our goal is to support the growth and enable innovation in media arts production.  We use each year as a benchmark for the quality and content we like to foster and see produced, continually raising the bar in our expectations of participants’ work at EMMEDIA.

Submission Theme:

Participants are encouraged to respond to the EMMEDIA 2010/2011 programming theme: Grain.

Emerging from the rubble of 2009’s CRASH! programming year, EMMEDIA’s upcoming programming thematic, Grain, assumes a generative focus. EMMEDIA takes this opportunity to critically reflect on its surroundings, moving through the fine grain of the city as a place, and from a regional, social and historical perspective. The United Nations has designated 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity.  In acknowledgement, EMMEDIA invites proposals that explore the implications of diversity and sustainability, in all its forms, from a regional perspective.  Here, biodiversity is broadly understood, and extends also into explorations of biological / technological engagement, diversity of identities, media and representation.

In addition, we welcome considerations of other meanings of grain: grain of sand, grain of truth, going against the grain, whole grain, grain as a unit of measurement, the grain boundary, gold grains, fine grain sugar. Any interpretation of grain is welcome and creative interpretations are encouraged.
