5th Annual Calgary (Super8) Filmmakers Challenge February 25th, 2010:
Calgary Filmmakers Vs. The World

January 18, 2010 - Calgary, AB - Filmmakers in Calgary have the opportunity to flex their creativity in the Calgary Super8 Filmmakers Challenge. The Challenge's participants must make an original short film that includes a set of specific criteria jointly determined by the filmmakers and the creators of the Challenge (Calgary filmmakers Mike Peterson and James Reckseidler).
The films will be screened on February 25th at The Distillery (615, 7 Ave, SW, Calgary). The event is open to the public and includes door prizes and live music from local bands. $12,000 in prizes will be awarded to participating filmmakers.

To celebrate its 5th year anniversary, the Challenge has extended an invitation to filmmakers the world over. “Our filmmakers can stand up against anything the world wants to throw at it” says event co-organizer, Mike Peterson. This year only, the Challenge is open to filmmakers from Prague to LA.

“Our vision is to not only promote local film culture, but show that the exceptional independent filmmaking scene that exists in Calgary is as good as just about anywhere--and a lot better than most.” Watching the locally made films up against their peers from other cities will certainly show whether this claim is true or not.

Invited filmmakers must make a short film, 3 to 5 minutes in length, each using the same criteria. Filmmakers are given over three months to work on their films. The point of the Challenge is to help foster the local filmmaking scene and showcase local works. It has been and remains a friendly competition with the only clear winner the audience. The use of Super8 film is encouraged but not mandatory and is meant to be taken as a metaphor.

The criteria for the 2010 Challenge is as follows:
Theme: Adapt a fairytale or fable (or create your own, use conventions of the genre).
Character: A fisherman
Technical Requirement: Slow-Motion and One scene shot without any cuts.
Random Element: Someone gets poked in the eye.

Co- organizer James Reckseidler is excited to see how each filmmaker will make the criteria their own. He is especially curious as to how filmmakers will show the person getting poked in the eye in what promises to be the biggest, most exciting year yet for Calgary’s filmmaking community.
